But after looking at this I realize there's a lot of seiyuus I came across, who are featured in the song. (about a good number of them from my favourite series Negima!) Some of the songs here are really interesting, combining 8-bit instrumentals and synth vocals.

1. ∞ usagiryoku- Marina Inoue (produced by Far East)
When I first think Marina, I expect a low, mellow voice (she VAs Kotarou from Negima). But in this song, she sings at a higher register, a cuter voice. But still good. Never watched the anime so I don't really know how she sounds like in this anime. The instrumentals have a typical 8-bit synth, sorta like the stuff you hear in Super Mario Bros. (NOT Roxette, the official one) The song sorta has a 90's technopop feel to it. Pretty much everywhere sounds the same. It's a cute song, but not that memorable.

2. Tomato no Kimochi- Kana Hanazawa (produced by Tanikugu)
Never heard of this VA. But based on first impression, it sounds like an oh-so-obvious anime song. Her singing voice is weak compared to most others in the album. The instrumentals are also pretty 8-bit, if not more. It looks like you're actually playing a game and some girl is singing along. Overall the song are more memorable than usagiryoku, but it lacks the feel of an actual song.

3. hagure Blues- Saki Nakajima (produced by hally)
No, it's not the Saki Nakajima from Hello! Project. It's the seiyuu. The song starts off with this cheesy beat which I thought was really funky. :P The beat's really bouncy and it gets in your head. Saki has a cute, genki voice, which fits really well for this already energetic song. The instrumentals are also really cool too. The bridge is really experimental.

4. Black Bunny Magic- Mayumi Asano (produced by quarta330)
Now going back to another VA I know. Star Jewel and Peace of Love are amazing. (and she's the VA of Hisoka from Yami no Matusei). When I first heard this song, it was a cross between WTF and LMAO. The rapping, is a big weird since she overdoes it. Her vocals are, however, still pretty good. The instrumentals are, personally, my favourite (but I could be biased). At least it sounds like an actual pop song, sorta like Namie Amuro. It's a good song, but seriously Mayu should go back to more serious singing.

5. hohoemi no Soldier- Shizuka Itou (Produced by Saitone)
Another seiyuu from Negima, Shizuka voices Misa Kakizaki. Going back to the typical anime stuff. The song is really catchy, with the really experimental heavy synth instrumentals. The vocals are, however, really passive compared to the instrumentals. Makes it sorta sound like Perfume, but up a notch. It's a good song though, at least compared to the more anime-sounding ones.

6. I believe!- Akeno Watanabe (Produced by Nullsleep)
Believe it or not, it's Chachamaru from Negima! I know it sounds cutesy, but it just is! The song is pretty genki, but not in a "I ate too much sugar way". This one sounds like another anime song, made it into an 8-bit version. It's an okay song, not all the memorable. But seriously, I want the low voice Akeno back! >w<

7. Nazonazo Cherry- Kazuko Kojima (Produced by Far East Recording)
If your looking for the song that ate too much sugar, it's this song. The vocals are extremely high pitched. The instrumentals have a cutesy anime style too. However, unlike the mediocre anime songs, the instrumentals actually has a steady good beat as if cute anime is infused with j-pop. Although it's a bit too cutesy for me, but if you're the type who likes this moe I highly recommend it.

8. Rururu Miracle Kuru Do!- Eri Nakao (Produced by Tanikugu)
When I first heard this song I seriously thought it was Yuki Matusoka, but it's actually Eri Nakao. The introduction is really cool, consisting only of 8-bit synth. The song sorta reminds me of Ai Otsuka's Mousou Chop, such that it has that spacey atmosphere to it. The song does build up in the chorus, with an interesting catchy beat. In fact, the synths even get their solo (how envious!). The vocals are alright, but not as memorable as the synths, which are probably the best in term sof quality.

9. Kuuhaku no Uta- Mamiko Noto (Produced by K->)
And yet another Negima VA (Nodoka Miyazaki). Her vocals are, recognizable. You'll know she sang it. It's the quiet, but low voice. Pretty much what to expect. The instrumentals are bright in comparison to Mamiko's calm voice. The overall song sounds a lot like 90's technopop, like that of Boomtang Boys (listen to Pictures). Probably the only song on the album that sounds more Western. It's a nice song to listen to, but it lacks a "wow" factor.

10. Mind Wing- Omi Minami (Produced by Saitone)
Another weird song, not like Black Bunny Magic with the rapping. This one takes the "Classy" approach. Though it suits the VA's voice really well, but the instrumentals here are really displaced. I mean, it sounds cool though, just a bit out of the ordinary. Why would anyone take a classy song and make it 8-bit?

11. Getsumen Oshinagaki- Michiko Neya and Chie Horikoshi (Produced by Far East Recording)
The beginning sounds as if it's gonna be a 'drama', then it leads to a really cool beat, with a tropical feel, though it still sounds obvious it's from an anime. This song is a duet, unlike the other songs. I don't know who either of the VAs are, but the one with the lower voice is pretty good, though the one with the higher voice isn't all that great. Unlike most other songs in the album, this song seems to deviate from the 8-bit style, though it has some of it. The song, though it's beautiful, but it felt too much of an anime song.

12. Lovely? Glory- Ayako Kawasumi (Produced by Tatsuya Kikuchi)
As the last song of the album, it's certainly an enjoyable one. The song has an early 90's pop feel (sorta like Sailor Moon meets Lazy Town) I like the tune to this song. It sounds like an anthem. The instrumentals are catchy, however the vocals are a little weak for this song. Though Ayako is a great seiyuu, but she does have more potential than that. It's a real shame. Overall, it's still a good song, though it may not be my type.

Overall, it's a pretty interesting album. Though half of them aren't all that memorable but some of the unique ones I've mentioned here you should check out.
Rating: 3/5

Oricon- B'z vs. Ayu

And so, it is here: The battle of the Oricon Masters.

Both Ayumi Hamasaki and B'z are the champions of the Oricon charts, with the most consecutive #1 for soloist and band, respectively. And it looks like this month we'll be seeing something really interesting.

Currently the week of Aug. 17, 2009 B'z is sitting at #1 in the Oricon singles chart with "Ichibu to Zenbu/Dive". Pretty usual considering the fact that these guys keep getting #1s since the 90's

Ayumi's new single, "Sunrise/Sunset (Love is All)" is recently released on Aug. 12, and pretty much everyone following the Oricon KNOWS she's gonna make it to #1.
But it seems that nowhere in the top ten I see Ayumi. Maybe Oricon hasn't added her yet. But determinate fans would see her at #1 in the charts (hence she's added as #1 on Wikipedia, even though Aug. 24 hasn't even come yet!)
Like B'z, Ayu has pulled #1s since the 90's, consecutively. So it wouldn't be surprising if she does next week.

As for me, I support both B'z and Ayu because they're both amazing musical artists. And both deserve to top the charts. Chances are, they both will. And again, this is probably the most memorable moment in Oricon history.

Yui Horie- HONEY JET!! album review

I haven't done a Yui Horie review in a LOOONG time. And alas, here's her newest album, HONEY JET!! Nice cover btw

In case you haven't know Yui Horie is also another well known seiyuu (frequently featured in the seiyuu magazine, PickUp Voice, along with Nana Mizuki, Yukari Tamura, and Aya Hirano, in fact, they're the only ones that ever get in the frontcovers!). She's most famous for voicing Naru from Love Hina, Makie from Negima! (hence she's one of my favourite characters), Minori from Toradora!, and the often forgotten Yuki Cross from the ever so big <s>Twilight</s> Vampire Knight!

I don't have the album because it wasn't released while I was in Japan, but I'll be reviewing through imeem.

Moment- The album starts off with a pretty interesting clock beat with Yui Horie (in synth) repeating tick tock. Sweet. The song later leads to a synthy song (similar to her singles Vanilla Salt and Silky Heart). Apparently Hocchan went with the whole Perfume craze with the two singles and the robotic voice. The instrumentals and vocals are passive and less repetive than the VS or SH, making it at least better to listen.
Rating: 3/5

JET!!- Probably the theme song of the album. It's generic, pop-rock with some violins. Similar to Maaya Sakamoto's Triangular or even Purachina. The acoustic style's better for Hocchan's more natural voice in comparison to her last song. Though played out pretty well, it isn't my type.
Rating: 3/5

Secret Garden- At first based on the title, it's gonna be some sorta of nature-y song like Time Capsule (also by Yui Horie, in her 3rd album Sky), or something more-or-less epic, like Koi no Etude (a rare Hocchan song), but it turns out to be ska! Like Scramble. It's an upbeat song. And it brings forth a summer mood too (I want summer why is the weather not that hot!?) Well after listening to a few times it kinda reminds me of Vitamin C and Smash Mouth meets anime. But to tell you the truth, I hope she actually makes a naturepic song out of this instead. :D
Rating: 3/5

Prism- another synthy song, with an angelic atmosphere. Her vocals are somewhat monotonous in this song, however if you get to the 2nd verse, her vocals are back to the 'Perfume' robotic voice. The beat is interesting though, but probably not the best. It's relaxing compared to the repetitive Vanilla Salt. As for the title, Prism, it also a song by Nanase Aikawa in my new album, Reborn. Also synthy, but don't expect to be the same as Yui's version.
Rating: 3.5/5

Vanilla Salt- the first single for the album, and the ending theme song of Toradora! I don't watch the anime though. And this is also the first single where Hocchan follows the Perfume style trend (in case you are wondering, Perfume is currently a big girl band doing robotic synth music). The beginning "Vanilla Saruto de" is really repetitive, turning it into a chant. However, when going to the melody, it's a little better. The instrumentals are hard synth, drowning out Yui's voice. If you find the 3 minutes of this music too irritating, the piano-vocal bridge calms it down. If not then this melody would bug the crap out of people. The single songs off an album are usually the songs I don't like as much, probably because they tend to be overrated. (sometimes it can be the other way around, like her 2nd and 3rd album's singles, you know what they are)
Rating: 2/5

Spica- Tired of the hard-techno music already? Then Spica is refreshing. A nature-y ballad with some violin, we go back to what she's good at: easy listening. Though pleasant to listen, for some reason Hocchan sounds, happy. I dunno if this song's meant to be happy or not. However, the chorus is pretty good. The rhythmic beat is pretty catchy even for a ballad.
Rating :3.5/5

Silky Heart- the other Perfume-techno single, except it's a little less Perfume but more H!P. The beat is catchier, and you can dance to it. Silky Heat is probably better than Vanilla Salt, overall. But neither seem to be the best of her career. In the music video, you could see Hocchan dance, in a way that seems unsatisfying. If you don't know what I'm talking about, she's 32 (turning 33 in a month!) and doing the stuff meant for tweens isn't gonna be enjoying. Seriously, Hocchan, if you're not interested in what you're doing, sue Starchild!
Rating: 3/5

Get Up and Go- another dance track, but not like Silky Heart. Get up and Go leans more toward stuff by Avex than Perfume. Arguably, sounds like B'z meets H!P. The song is reminescent to 90's-early 2000's dance music, thus be the reason why I might like this song more. It's reinventing, and unique to her generic pop-rock or naturesque music style. It's also unique because this one other upbeat song that actually sounds more or less Western (Rihanna in the verses). This is the, based on my personal preference, the best track in the album. Then again, this is Yui Horie, and probably not the Yui Horie song.
Rating: 4.9/5

Peppermint Days- another easy listening music, another song better for Yui Horie. Like her last track, Peppermint Days sounds somewhat nostagic and Westerny. (90's contemporary rock), again making this song more unique to her oevre. This is probably one of her best songs in this genre.
Rating: 4.5/5

Love Countdown- And we're back to anime music! ^_~. And yes, expect it to be anime-y. No doubt about it. It's another energetic ska song. The beat is ridiculously addicting, though. ^^ And if you want a song to annoy your friends in a way that's appealing (but no rickrolling), then this is the song. Just how many times does she have to say "1,2,3,4,5!" This is one song that you can't say it's not an anime song.
Rating: 2.5/5

Blue Rainy Days- another light song that sounds like about half of Hocchan's normal songs. I can't recall the mood to this. It's rather happy yet so melancholic. What I find most appealing is the instrumentals: the drums at the end of the chorus adds to the already generic song, and the violin is yet another component to a lot of her songs, but it's beautiful too) Again, Hocchan's vocals are better with this song.
Rating: 2.7/5

Kimi no Soba ni- and finally, almost, a piano ballad. The emotional intrumentals are well done. Yui can pull off both a high voice and a low pitch at the same time. Purely relaxing. However, as you listen on it changes from a piano ballad to a rock/classical ballad. It's one of her most beautiful-sounding songs she has done, for now.
Rating: 4.7/5

Dear...- to finish the album off, here's a 2-minute ballad, entirely in English, or err... Engrish. Her vocals are cute, and so are the instrumentals. It's really sweet ^^. Perfect for a theme song for a children's show. Maybe Hocchan should do more of these songs instead.
Rating: none (it's a treat!)

Overall:- It's one of those albums which you don't necessary expect something you expect to listen. Some of her songs, like Get up and Go which you don't expect to hear, and Peppermint Days, which reaches past her usualities, are worth listening.
Rating: 3.7/5

Song Sampler- Kim Wilde

During the 80's there's <s>Rick Astley</s> a influx of female singers in the music scene. Madonna is probably the most famous one. Janet Jackson and Paula Abdul both pull off sensual dance moves. Joan Jett, Pat Benetar, and Blondie brought their rock hard hits. Belinda Carlisle carried out contemporary-rock hits (I also like her though she's notorius for bashing people in Rock the Cradle). But also in the 80's is an underrated, yet unique singer: Kim Wilde.
The reason why she's not as famous as the previous singers I've mentioned is because she isn't so much of a stage performer as the others (did I mention in her old videos she pulls off way-too-creepy poker faces). But one thing that makes her songs unique is her flexibility in music genres (though most singers in the 80's do, but not as diverse as Kim). And the other reason is she's from Britain, hence not well known in America (but the song Kids in America is, oddly enough)

I was first introduced to Kim Wilde in an 80's compilation CD, and happened to like her both songs: Kids in America (which I've listened a newer No Secrets version to before) and Water on Glass (also good). I was graduated from Grade 6 at that time, and liked upbeat songs (and still do!). A couple years later I revisited the singer online, and listened to a few more songs, and liked them too (both new and old). After listening to a number of her songs Kim Wilde has become one of my favourite singers. I've been listening to her a lot lately for the past month or so, so I'll write an info about her songs, just like the one I did with Nana Mizuki.

Here are some of her many songs from each era, chronologically.

Kids in America- probably her most famous song (and covered by an awful lot of people). It's a really cheery song of the 80's, with a punk rock sound. One thing about this song is that the opening is just, epic. One of my friends thought it sounds like a murder scene lolz. But then the song changes to the catchy punk beat with a steady beat. I also heard this song when I 'bumped' into a DDR machine and I decided to dance to this song. Like most of the big songs, it's usually not one of my most favourites, but I still like it.

Water on Glass- the other song I've heard and like in the 80's compilation CDs. Not as memorable, but also a catchy beat with a relatively epic opening (this one sounds like tingling crystals) But the drivy guitars sound a lot better in this song, in contrast to the more cheery Kids in America. I also like this song because it sounded like an anime opening theme. Those of you who love action anime or sentai films you should check this song out :P

The Second Time (Go for It)- in the mid 80's you'll notice Kim's music style changed from cheery punk rock tunes to more new-wave sounding stuff. This song sounds a lot more like the mainstream artists I've mentioned above, making the songs of the time not as memorable. However, "The Second Time" seems to stand out for me for some oddy reason. It has a lot of attitude or it sounds like I was riding on the subway XD. This song also more experimental than her other songs of that time, similarly as other 80's artists in Asia, such as Priscilla Chan and Yu Hayami.

You Keep Me Hanging On- mid-late 80's. This song blends in both the synths of "The Second Time" and the punky beats of "Kids in America", making it yet another catchy song. The lyrics are a lot more serious and realistic than the relatively 'tweeny' sounding songs I've mentioned before. Alright, this is actually a cover, but it's pretty good.

You Came- later 80's also a great song, but not her most memorable, probably because it sounds a bit too mainstream. But if you're into Naruto, listen up. This song sounds a LOT like the first opening theme. Another song that sounds similar I'll mention later in the post.

European Soul- in the same album as "You Came". Not one of her well known songs, but also relatively interesting. We start to listen to something that's more mature and sensual rather than youthy. Her voice in the lower register is pleasant to listen, sounding more sultry. The instrumentals are also less rock more jazz. And the instrumental bridge where there is a key change is downright dramatic. Keep in mind, it's a relatively long song.

Can't Get Enough of your Love- a song from 1990, the year I was born. It sounds a mashup of "Kids in America", "You Keep Me Hanging On" and "You Came", with Bonnie and Clyde thrown in too. Also another alert for Naruto fans. This one sounds ALMOST the same as the first opening theme, "Rocks", by Hound Dog.

Who do you think you are- This sounds NOTHING like the Spice Girls' version. The song is from 1992, I think, along with another of Kim song I really like. This one's a lot more or less laid back than her older songs. It's certainly more feminine, in an innocent kinda way. It sorta sounds like Belinda Carisle and Shania Twain being the lead 'characters' in shoujo anime, like Marmalade Boy. It's sounds similar to "You Came" fyi.

Try Again- also from her album "Love Is...", which also has the previous song. This is the first Kim Wilde ballad I've listened to, and so far her best one. In fact this was once one of my most famourite ballads of all times. It sounds a lot like those crooner songs, except it does have some rock vibes and jazz thrown in too. "Try Again" seems to be another song that gave Kim Wilde the potential to raise her voice. (like almost every singer who does mostly upbeat the ballads kill them, but sometimes it goes for the better, such as this case) I've reviewed this song before so I guess I won't say more. You get what I mean...

If I Can't Have You- another infamous cover, but still pretty pleasant to listen ;). 90's music are leaning toward more eurobeat (not like Initial D silly, true eurobeat) or europop. The style is rather obscure in America with their grunge age, making europop unpopular. Despite this, Kim's voice definitely improved, yet returned to her youth roots. Well actually, this song give you a shopping atmosphere. Pretty cool.

Born to be Wild- Yep! It's another cover. This time in 2002. Like a lot of past stars they do a lot of covers in the later careers. I actually like this song more than the original Steppenwolf version, or maybe I prefer action style music rather than oldies. It's an energetic techno-rock song with a very European vibe. Sounds like a stereotypical racing song. WARNING: do not play this song while driving.

Perfect Girl- The latest addition to Kim's oevre, from the year 2006. "Perfect Girl" returns to the punky songs in the past along with some more new-eurorock style just like her previous song. And yes, if you like action anime, you should really check this song out (I've also uploaded Magical Lyrical Girl Nanoha opening themes with this song) I think I've reviewed this song before on lj, but expect it to sound like a fusion of punk, europop (Girls Aloud), and anime. This probably may not be a favourite of many people, "Perfect Girl" is one of her most memorable.

Final thoughts: Kim Wilde may not be a familiar name for most music listeners (even some girl I know who listens to Britpop doesn't even know who she is!), but she has some unique songs that may interest some people. A lot of her songs make excellent anime theme songs, unlike mainstreamies, and if introduced to anime fanpeople she might develop a cult following (just like Caramell). So if whether you love Naruto or Nanoha or Power Rangers you gotta love Wilde.

Listening to- Strike On- m.o.v.e

Random Merchandises I've bought from Japan

This may be the most random set of merchandises I've bought straight from Japan. They're pretty expensive and I regreted that I spent too much too fast (there ARE cheaper CDs elsewhere!) However I'm glad I bought them and they're not pirated. (I buy them to support the artists)

As a recent fan of Nana Mizuki (ok I've listened to her for quite a time but wasn't really a fan until Hime Murasaki), I bought Dream Skipper. I've reviewed the CD earlier and decided to buy it. And another 'relatively silly' reason I bought it cuz my favourite song of this time, White Lie, was playing in the store. After listening to her discography I think Dream Skipper was her best album. Also at the time her newest #1 album, Ultimate Diamond, wasn't in stores yet thanks to the notorious delay (thankfully it was for the better.)

A Votre Sante! (a mispelled name for the French phrase 'A Vorte Santé' -healthy meal) is probably Yui Horie's rarest album (in fact, the only album I have trouble finding and listening to online). I'd like to listen to it a try because there are rock versions of some of her biggest hits (eg. Hikari). Although some of her albums, like Sky, are pretty good, I didn't buy due to budget and availability.

Nanase Aikawa's Reborn is an album I wasn't really thinking of buying because of availability but because I'm a fan of Nanase, I bought it anyways. When I got back and started listening to the CD it felt, different from listening online. Although different from what I've expected, some of her songs, in particular I Love My Way, I happened to enjoy.

elly's Neverland (and RIP Michael Jackson btw) is probably the album I least look forward to of the five, partly due to the fact I'm not as big of a fan as the other artists I support, but still a fan. I bought it because I want to listen to some of her stuff, plus her stuff is hard to find. When I was in HK her newest album (forgot what it's called, but it's really long and in Japanese) costed a ridiculous $60 Canadian, and she's not even that famous! Ok, she's from the famous SPEED. Right now I'm listening to her album, and I have to admit some of her songs are pretty good, though it is more passive than her older works and SPEED. I've listened to and liked Last present earlier, and I later discovered La Verité and ☆ (I know weird title).

But what really surprised me the most is Amika Hattan's Wasurenai wa. I've recently listened to her songs and became a fan of her. I also liked her songs from the dancelectronica To the Light and her R+B Next To You. I tried to look for her GRACE album but ended up buying a CD I have no idea what's inside. It turned out to be enka! Though it's not the type of music I listened, I ended up liking some of her songs, such as the really weird but entertaining Kitakaze (North Wind), and the jazzy Aristocats-esque Akasaka no Yoru wa Fukete.

You may be wondering why I didn't buy too many. First of all the CDs are expensive and there is budget limit. Second of all I couldn't find a lot of artists I like, such as Tak Matsumoto, which I've been looking for quite a time. And I didn't bought popular artists like Ayu because, not because I don't like her, but her CDs are very prevalent and I could get them anywhere.

I also bought a set of copics, which I still haven't started using yet (I dunno why but I'm gettin' lazy these days). They're cheaper to get in Japan than in Canada (over $100 Canadian dollars). They're also cheaper cuz they're made in Japan. It took me so long to choose the right set. Ok I really should get back to the drawing board soon. ^^'

Listening to- ☆- elly

My Tokyo Trip- Part 3

We just left off in the middle of Day 4 with Harajuku. We strolled around Ueno Park in the afternoon. We went in late May so there are no sakuras at the time. But it's still pretty enjoyable to see a more natural side of Tokyo. However, the park is very big which means lots of walking.

Ueno may not be as flourishing as Kyoto, but there's quite a lot of traditional Japanese architecture too. There really isn't much there, except for a train station undergoing rennovation and office buildings that aren't as interesting as the ones in Shinjuku.

And we're back at Ginza! The weather was a lot better than when we first went. We walked along the complicated street crossings to get a glimpse of the busy life. We only stayed there for a short time because our feet were sore.

To end the long day, we went inside the Tokyo Tower, which is pretty much essential for a trip in Tokyo. The elevators inside are pretty fascinating, as well as mesmerizing. The view in Tokyo Tower wasn't as clear as the view in Landmark Tower that day, but it's worthwhile visiting.

Day 5, the last day of the Tokyo Trip, wasn't as memorable. We spent the first half of the day shopping in Shinjuku until we went broke (we didn't have much money left in the first place). In the afternoon we went back to Keio because of really heavy rain (and we have to check out).
Although the weather didn't really like us in the Tokyo Trip, I still enjoy the trip because of the many cool stuff the city has to offer. I really wish to go there in the future. (Ok, except one note: find a smoke free restaurant)

My Tokyo Trip- Part 2

Day 3 seems to be yet another rainy day. Despite walking in the rain and having to carry an umbrella all along, we first went to Shibuya, Tokyo's shopping center.

This is pretty much the only picture I've taken in Shibuya (look at the sign on the top right corner!) due to the rain. But if you walk inside there's tons of really cool (but expensive) shopping boutiques in these two buildings. 109 and 109-square. I bought a few clothes there.

This suspender dress-shirt tunic is a popular trend in Japan. They're everywhere! There are other clothes in Shibuya I couldn't afford. (ok, an excuse. You can buy the same stuff in Hong Kong for cheaper). But after going back to HK, Shibuya's clothing qualities are WAY better. :)

In Shibuya we went to this ramen place. I think it's called Kanza (神座). Unlike most restaurants I've heard there's a hostess greeting you. You can actually see the chefs cook in the middle of the restaurant. After someone leaves they greet you, loudly!

The weather did get a little better in the afternoon. We first went back to Shinjuku before we head off to Yokohama. It's a half hour ride from Shinjuku. We went there as a side trip. As we went to Yokohama, the skies are less cloudy.

I know my camera's pretty crappy on night shots, but this is the view from Landmark Tower. Shinjuku's pretty lively at night. We see a lot of pachinko parlours around.

The next day was a lot more entertaining. This is the entrance to its famous Takeshita-dori. The stuff there is a lot cheaper than Shibuya, and some clothes look pretty eccentric.

You'll see a lot of these gothic lolita/costume-esque clothing in Harajuku. I didn't buy a lot because it would look too outlandish for someone who lives in Canada. They're a pleasure to look at though...

And this is an art gallery rennovated from an old house. I had a great time there. Though it was a lot of walking and the merchandises are expensive, Tokyo is worthwhile to visit. I recommend you go there for at least 5 days if you want to get the entire glimpse of the city.

Shinjuku was where I stayed. The hotel was Keio Plaza. Shinjuku's a pretty interesting place. The west side is pretty much wacko business buildings. The east side is a bright shopping district.

Shinjuku Station is one of the biggest and busiest train stations in the world. Getting through is a real PitA. I literally had to take 15 minutes to get to the other side and another 15 minutes to know where I was, or which train to take. The people who work there didn't really know English very well either.

On the first day I went to Roppongi Hills. Roppongi is infamous for its clubbing and nightlife. (Didn't I mention there are a LOT of pachinko bars around?) Roppongi Hills has a lot of wicked architecture worth looking. There's too many in one small area I couldn't take all of it.

Day 2: Ikebukuro is another big area in Tokyo, and it happens to be my favourite place to go. Sunshine City is a great shopping mall which has anything and everything, but most of the stuff are pretty $$$. I also went to animate, the center for anime merchandises. I bought a couple of CDs which I'll explain later. And I also bought copic markers which are cheaper if you get them there than if you buy them in Toronto. Unfortunately I couldn't find any Negima (my favourite anime) goods.

This is one of the many restaurants in Sunshine City. I took a picture of it because the name of the restaurant is pretty weird lolz. I ate at a traditional Japanese restaurant though.

During the late afternoon we went to Ginza. Of couse I didn't bought anything there because it's the most expensive place to shop. (Think Yorkville meets Tsim Sha Tsui) When we first went there it was pouring rain, so we went to the subway to get back to Shinjuku. More unfortunately, we wasted 15 minutes trying to get money out of a ticket machine just to realize we put the right amount of money and not extra.

This is the ticket machine that 'ate' our money. I thought we inserted 5000 yen into the machine and the remaining 4000 yen couldn't come out. After debating with the non-English speaking service managers it comes to realize there wasn't a 5000 yen in there. It took 15 minutes to find out we put 1000 yen, not 5000.

Anyways, Part 2 will be explained after.

I'm back from Hong Kong!

So you may be wondering, where did I go for the past month or two? I was in Hong Kong. I had a great time there. While I was in Hong Kong I did bring in some good inspiration of the city. I'll upload some interesting pictures of the city. And if I don't have the pics I'll explain some info.
The city brought me some inspiration for an interesting story I wish to tell. :D

While I was in Hong Kong, I also went to Tokyo, Dubai, and Beijing.

Tokyo- Tokyo's amazing. Even though I didn't go to Osaka and Kyoto (stupid H1N1). I also went to Yokohama. There's a lot of stuff to buy there. Bought some CDs and nice clothes, and everything's so $$$. I, pretty much went broke. Enough said.

Dubai- Dubai has some wicked architecture, like, wicked. The city has become a building galleria. The weather's so hot I felt I as in an oven. Desert safari was thrilling, though I saw someone threw up.

Beijing- Beijing's ok, but my mom wanted me to go. There's some cool architecture there too, but for some reason I'm not liking this place as much as Dubai. There's quite a lot of walking, stuff too cheap to be cheap, and really rude people.

Looking forward to explain a little more about these places, and some song reviews.

Song Sampler- Kaori Nanao- Mineral

Gosh why did I not reviewed this before? -w-
At last, here's my song review for Kaori Nanao's Mineral I'ved reviewed her first album before on livejournal, which doesn't include this song. And this song happens to be the song that brought me into liking Kaori Nanao.
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 166px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_MN8Ev-gZF6o/ShJrxeSbrhI/AAAAAAAAABk/TUhJ2-Q8fQw/s320/post-200407-1131356190.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5337447006075596306" />

Anyways, so where did I randomly found this song? On the internet of course. And I thought the name "Mineral" sounds unusual. But I listened to it, it's a pretty interesting song.
To give you a brief overview, Mineral is a pop-rock song, similar to (if I'm correct) The Moffatts's Bang Bang Boom. The guitar is played from the renowned Tak Matsumoto from B'z. Keep in mind I listened to this before I heard of B'z and become interested in their music.
Overall Mineral is a catchy song, with some jazzy southern vibes to it :D. It's cheery and it feels good. You can both rock and dance at the same time lolz. The song has a consistent beat which is easy to get hooked on. Tak Matsumoto's guitar riffs are amazing, but regardless, all of the guitar is a great listen. The trumpets at the chorus add to the jazzy vibe, which makes the song more than just an ordinary pop rock song.
Another thing that might have gotten me into Kaori Nanao is her voice. She sounds a lot like ANZA or (as others think), Nanase Aikawa, though not as husky as the former nor as nasal as the latter. She sounds in between, which makes her pleasant to listen to. Also Kaori's down-to-normal voice ties well to the upbeat song. The only thing that bugs me is her tendency to go off tune on the last notes. You'll notice when you listen to her a lot.
To sum things up, Mineral is one song you should listen to whether or not you're in a good mood or in a bad mood. It keeps you in high spirits. If you like this song I should suggest you listen to Iinjanai!!, also by Kaori Nanao. It's a difficult find, but again worth checking.
Mineral is one of the ending songs for the anime Cooking Master Boy. I personally think this is the best theme songs for the series. But if you're looking for another upbeat song that's more serious, less youthy, then try ZARD's Iki mo Dekinai and DEEN's Kimi sa Ireba. They're both good hears too.

Rating: 5/5

Nana Mizuki- DREAM SKIPPER

I did mention on my last post on Nana Mizuki that I'll be doing an album review for DREAM SKIPPER. Since there's quite a number of songs I'd like to review on this particularly 'unpopular' album, I'll do an album review. Here it is. Enjoy!

Takara Mono- We start off with a piano ballad. First impression: Very Ayu. Beautiful sounding, but lacks power. A bit laid back and ordinary for me. There isn't much going on with this song. Nana has the potential to pull a bit of her powerful high notes, but it doesn't happen here. If I didn't know Nana sings this, I could have thought this is an Ayumi Hamasaki ballad. Not only the voice but also the style of the song itself.
Rating: 3/5

Be Ready- A big contrast to her last track. Be Ready sounds like a reinvented 80's new wave. It sounds like one of those old-school shows that either do Asian cuisine or sentai shows. It's catchy but as if I listen to it too many times it gives me headaches. The synth instrumentals are overpowering. ><>Keep your Hands in the Air- Like I said earlier, Nana Mizuki has a dance track in her earlier albums. And this is the dance track. Like through the night, this song leans on the urban/hip hop song. Unlike TtN, Keep your hands in the Air (long title lolz) sounds more urban and less synth (which, in turn, sounds more Western), as well as adding some classical vibe to it. It's a great song to do some wacky street dance. The odd thing about this song is the sudden pauses in the verses. o_O Although this is a great dance track, I honestly prefer Through the Night better.
Rating: 4/5

Still in the Groove- a fast trance/techno song. Sounds a lot like Ragnarok Online and other RPGs. A contrast to the more Western sounding last track. This one says high impact video games (like Initial D). Quite epic, actually. XD
Rating: 3.7/5

Sabaku no Umi- another song that reminds me of something heard in R.O. Starts off with subtle guitars, but builts up to a more drivy rock in the chorus, sorta like that in UVERworld. Vocals remind me of hitomi with the 'equivalent to the Redneck' tone. This is one of the few songs in the album that sounds more of the Western world. The bridge has some played-around with vocals similiar to Heaven Knows, an earlier Nana song. This song reminds me a lot like OLIVIA. Overall, beautiful vocals, unique song. Worth checking.
Rating: 4.5/5

Dear to Me- instrumentals on the lighter side, sorta like Atomic Kitten. Nana's vocals aren't bad here. The song sounds beautiful, but kinda ordinary and unmemorable for me.
Rating: 2.5/5

What Cheer?- another techno song, except lighter. Reminds me a lot like Nami Tamaki. Nana's vocals aren't as great in this song, perhaps her vibrato makes her voice unaligned with the instrumentals. It's a cheerful song, but I'm not too sure if it's right for her. It might be better for Ayu, since her vibratos are usually not as heavy as Nana's
Rating: 2.5/5

Jet Park- an energetic rock/techno song. The melody sounds a bit strange with the constant change in key. For some reason the chorus reminds me of those party songs you hear in musicals. To sum up the song, it sounds like anime meets High School Musical. :D
Rating: 3.5/5

White Lie- This is, personally, my favourite song in the album. Though in the typical pop rock genre, but WAY catchier. This song's got a bitta attitude and some melancholy to it. Everything in the song says catchy and would get stuck in my head. Instrumentals, melody, everything. It's one of those rare rock songs where you can rock and pull off some wacko dance moves at the same time, like that of Finger Eleven's Paralyzer. Even though I really like this song, Nana's vocals are not nearly the best, perhaps not the right song for her. Even so, this song's addicting. I suggest you check it out. :D
Rating: 5/5

Noctune -Revision-- The title may sound like it's gonna be a ballad, but it's not. Though the song starts of a innocent bells instrumentals, it does build up with the pop rock sound similiar to a few other songs in the album. Verses are slow which later builds up with more light. Her vocals are more controlled here. Closer to the chorus she keeps changing her key. Her Engrish is pretty, err... *no comment*. Not bad. It's catchy, but not the most memorable.
Rating: 3.5/5

Himawari- instrumentals sound like MIDI, so it sorta has an early 90's feel to it. A slow song, but indeed beautiful, especially her vocals. The biggest drawback to this song is that it isn't all that memorable.
Rating: 3.3/5

Koishiteru- big band anime sounding song. Her voice is back at the higher register, which suits the innocence of this song. Its catchy sounding, but because it sounds too anime for me, I'm not really into it.
Rating: 2/5

In a Fix- another progressive pop-rock song reminiscent to 90's B'z. The melody, especially at the chorus, sounds a little peculiar because it constantly changes key, as a result, somewhat harder to get used to. But its drivy and melancholic chorus seems to keep the song more or less pleasant to listen. The jazz/rock instrumental bridge is pretty good too.
Rating: 4/5

New Sensation- another pop rock song with a touch of jazz to it. It sounds a bit like 90's B'z, but on a higher pitch. If you like this I suggest you listen to "part 2" of this song: Abilities in her next album Alive and Kicking. (ok not exactly part 2 but sounds so similiar) Not bad.
Rating: 4/5

Refrain -classico-- The album ends with yet another piano/strings ballad. A little better than Takaramono. Probably more colourful with the stings and more emotional too. Even Nana's voice picks up her emotions better in this song. Enough said, the more emotional sounding the song the vocal would do that too. Another ballad that would be more or less suitable for Ayu. Though it does make you fall asleep, this song is probably Nana's best ballad in the album.
Rating: 3.7/5

Overall: A pretty good album with some of her best songs she's done. DREAM SKIPPER has a diverse genre and styles that combine both native Japanese sounds and some Western vibes to it, making it one of her better albums.
Rating: 4/5

Song Sampler- Nana Mizuki

Alright, I thought I would do random song sampler with this fine singer here: Nana Mizuki.

If you don't know who she is you may be familiar with Hinata Hyuuga from the megaseries Naruto. She is her voice actress. But beyond her voice acting career is her more notable singing career. Perhaps labelled as "The Ayumi Hamasaki of anime" , Nana is currently the most successful voice acting singer out there and has set records in the anime music industry: 1 #1 single, a #2 album (no seiyuu has ever achieved this) and countless runner up singles. Thanks to her unique voice and genre variety. (Note: She stated that she "wanted to be an enka singer" and went more on the singing path, more so than her voice acting, which is on the other hand, not as renowned)
Despite her present tremendous success in the music industry, she didn't start off that way when her music career first started. (similar to the Rihanna syndrome, where you become more famous over time) Her first produces are commercial flops, though they still are great to listen. That's why I'm here to pull off some song sampling before she became the renowned Nana Mizuki today.

Heaven Knows- Supersonic Girl (2001)
This is one of her first singles, from her infamous Supersonic Girl debut album. (Ok, not so infamous, but flopped commercially because of her 10 year old face on the album cover) There are some good songs in that album. Heaven Knows is one of them. I think I have reviewed this song earlier on Livejournal, but for now I'll post here.
The song has a pop-rock genre. The beginning starts off with weird, fast rapping which you won't understand. Before the chorus introduces a 'rising sun' feel bringing forth her nasally voice, similar to that like Ayumi Hamasaki. The chorus sounds a lot like ANZA's Mienai Chizu and Mayumi Asano's Star Jewel. Both insert songs from Card Captor Sakura and Mermaid Melody, respectively. Perhaps the reason for liking this song is because Mienai Chizu is one of my favourite songs of all time. At the end you'll hear Nana sing as if it were played in reverse. Though the song is somewhat eccentric and heavily played around with, it sounds catchy and bright.
Rating: 4/5

Transmigration- Supersonic Girl
Also from Supersonic Girl, this is a great dance song. It seems to be a tradition that in every early Nana Mizuki album there's a catchy dance track. I'll explain another later) Transmigration sounds like a late 80's- early 90's pop song, with a jazzy feel to it. I love the beginning where the song Starts off with a somewhat dark piano instrumentals which later slowly, then suddenly build up into this dance track. It makes me feel like I'm in an urban setting. Her voice is powerful in comparison to the more Ayu-nasal Heaven Knows. Also note that this song is produced by Masami Okui, a singer primarily doing anime songs, hence you may hear familiarity to some of her works (ie. Rinbu Revolution). Just thought I would post something that I've heard, though for most of you this song may be kinda unmemorable, but it's a great song to get off your chair and dance :P.
Rating: 3.8/5

Brilliant Star- Magic Attraction
This is from her second album, yet another of her minor albums. This one's an amazing song when I keep hearing this song over and over. Brilliant Star is a pop-rock ballad, in which the verses are very gentle, easy listening. Then it builds up later in the verse with a gentle-to-dramatic sound, which, in my opinion, my favourite part of this song. The chorus is pretty interesting, alternating from powerful to sensitive. Brilliant Star reminds me a lot like some of the songs by OLIVIA (Lufkin), especially Dekinai. The guitar solo bridge sounds like that of a dramatic movie lol. The song ends with some classy piano solo, present throught the song. Brilliant star is a beautiful, yet underrated song by Nana Mizuki, worth checking.
Rating: 5/5

Through the Night- Magic Attraction
This is Magic Attraction's dance track. Unlike Transmigration, which is more jazzy, Through the Night is a more synth-hip hop, present sounding dance track. The intro starts with some techy steam song, which leads to a catchy beat, which sounds really cool. This song is probably not the best for Nana Mizuki's voice. She sounds somewhat ordinary, though she does pull some powerful high notes in this song. In contrast to the okay vocals, the instrumentals stand out very well. Not only do I like the dance track to this, but the instrumental bridge is purely one-of-a-kind. The bridge has a streamline, heavily synth, then some dark-synth beats, like when you playing inside a video game. Purely experimental and perfect for a dance solo XD. If you want to hear a Nana Mizuki dance track, this is probably the best one.
Rating: 4.7/5

White Lie- Dream Skipper
My favourite track in the album, which I'll explain later in the full album review.

Take a Shot- Alive and Kicking
Nana Mizuki's on her way to success with this album, and Take a Shot is, in my opinion, the most remarkable track on Alive and Kicking. This one's an fast pace, synth song. It might as well count as the dance track on the album, but not so heavily beated as Through the Night. The song start off with some light piano, which then is lightly layered with more synth beats. The guitar tracks are powerful, yet the overall sounds light. Nana Mizuki's are occasionally powerful, occassionally gentle. Along with the light techno tune, the song does bring in some Chinese-sounding vibes on the instrumental breaks. The best part is after the bridge (similar to the beginning instrumentals), and the song changing keys. I thought it sounds more zesty, which is why I like this song. Take a Shot is indeed a great, streamlined song, though it may not demonstrate her best oeuvre.
Rating: 4.5/5

Wild Eyes- Hybrid Universe
As you approach Nana's newer albums, things do in fact sound a little different. The songs are more epic sounding and not as laid back as those you'll hear in her previous albums. Wild Eyes is used as one of the ending theme songs for the anime Basilisk (the other being another Nana Mizuki song, which I'll explain later). Although Wild Eyes is a drivy rock song, I wouldn't consider it epic sounding like Justice to Believe or Eternal Blaze, merely rock, with a bit of synth to it. Nana's vocals differ greatly in this song, notably lower and more driven (like that of opera). The song feels somewhat lively and tearful at the same time, which is probably the most interesting thing about this song.
Rating; 3/5

Hime Murasaki
This is the big one. Another ending theme for Basilisk, I personally like Hime Mursasaki WAY more. In fact, this is probably the best Nana Mizuki song of all time. Unlike Wild Eyes, Hime Murasaki is a grunge rock ballad. It's a beautiful, emotional song, blending in powerful and sensitive vocals, epic music, and some classical vibe. The chorus blends in both drivy guitar riffs and the classical beauty, with a passive bridge, like that of Ai Otsuka's Cherish the melodic guitar solo. I think that with such a ballad, this brings forth Nana Mizuki's true vocal potential. Although I really like this song, sadly this song is not in any of her albums, nor does it have an instrumental version. :( It's an amazing song to do karaoke so it's a real pity that there isn't one. Hime Murasaki is added to one of my personal "Top Ballads" list, and I strongly recommend you listen to it. ^^
Rating : 5/5 (can't go higher lolz)

Alright, I pretty much took a brief review of some of her best early songs. Some of her newer stuff are ok, though they either sound too epic or anime-ish.

LYN is officially back!

Lily Yarn Needles is officially back after a unpredictably long hiatus (ok not so long I have posted sparingly for the past months). I'm back to post some interesting snippets and reviews!

Alas I'm done my exams and studio project. All that work laid to rest for the next four months. I'm hoping to be more involved in LYN especially on my vacation to Hong Kong and wherever else I'm travelling to this summer. There's plenty of things to explore there lol. I haven't been there in years!

Stick around for more stuff posted here. Her latest single, Rule/Sparkle, will be released next week.
Although last year she realizes that she suffers from deafness in left ear, she manages to get through 3 singles and a best album. She'll do anything to stay in the spotlight, even if it means wearing herself out. I wonder if she sleeps...

Alright, I saw the PV and it was, great. I got to hear the whole song XP. Now let's talk about the song.
This song's a catchy techno rock song. Similar to the stuff you hear from TM Revolution, but a bit of a stretch. If you're more familiar with Ayu, then this song should remind you of Evolution, Mirrorcle World. It sounds epic. :P Reason for the fast pace and music style is because it is used for Dragonball Evolution movie, great for an action flick. Although I'm not into Dragonball and certainly not the movie, this song really keeps me pumping.
The song's already pumping at the beginning of the song, then breaking into a catchy chorus. It has the in-your-face feel to it. Instrumentals breaks are particularly catchy. Verses are decent. The second part of the verse contrasts the usual edginess of the song, which later builds up as it reaches the chorus.
If you like added surprise and through catchiness then you should really check out this song. It will definitely keep you awake. Also check out her c/w Sparkle. Based on the preview it's actually pretty pleasant to hear. Though different from Rule, Sparkle is another dance track, leaning toward a more techno/trance genre, something we haven't heard from her in ages.
I think this single will do a lot better than her previous two singles. Its catchiness will attract a wide audience from both already-Ayu fans and newbies. The song is used for the more familiar Dragonball movie, which expands the audience to people who just watch the movies. And in comparison to the more typical Ayu-sounding singles like Mirrorcle World and Days/Green made for Ayu fans, Rule/Sparkle will go far.

Enough said, the style of the song obviously explains that it's Japanese, and not something you'd hear from any American song. One is because of Ayu herself. You can tell it's Ayu; she's that famous. Second have you heard American songs like this? Prolly not, unless it's years ago. Now that BoA has broke into the Western industry, Ayu could be next with this song as the theme for Dragonball movie, as the movie would be released worldwide promoting the movie itself along with Ayu's song. But here's the question, does Ayu want to break into the US industry like BoA? Even so will the target audience still be the same?

Anyways, both songs are pretty good in my opinion. I'd buy the single. And hopefully I can also buy Nanase Aikawa's new album if they have it around. :P

Rating: 4.5/5
If you like this song, try: evolution, Startin', Mirrorcle World- Ayumi Hamasaki, Ignite- TM Revolution
for Sparkle: Lady Gaga

Here's the PV that got leaked into the internet.

Ayumi Hamasaki - Rule -

Song Sampler- Roxette- Almost unreal

Almost Unreal - Roxette

For the past half a year I've started listening to Roxette, and happen to like a number of songs. Here's one of them I liked recently, Almost Unreal.

Introduction starts slow, with a classical instrumental which sounds like these royal ball dances. The verses are slow, with a typical 80-90's slow jam. The vocals and instrumentals pick up at the chorus, which brings forth this contrast from passive to confident.
The melody is catching and feelable; it can get the hang of you. At least for me.
The lyrics at the chorus are easy to pick up for some reason, and it gets stuck in my head all the time. Actually I happen to like the lyrics in all parts of the song. It goes from sensitive to strong.
As for the vocals, Marie's voice is decent. Per sings some parts of this song too at the bridge. It seems like this song is one of these songs that many people can sing. If you go karaoke try this song out. ;)
Another part of the song that particularly shines is the chorus after the instrumental break. Upping the pitch really makes the song reach up to higher levels. Even the backup vocals are great.

If there is anything to complain about, some people may find this song dated. I don't care because some old-school songs are amazing!

Ok, so this is a Roxette song. Nothing strange alright. The strange thing of this song is that it is inserted for the Super Mario Bros. Movie. O_O Don't even get me to thinking of the games. It's almost unreal!

Overall: This is one of their better ballads. One of the best ones along with Fading like a Flower and Listen to Your Heart. I haven't listened other ballads as much. If your into ballads I suggest you check this and other Roxette ballads.

Rating: 5/5

If you like this, try: Fading Like a Flower, Listen to Your Heart- Roxette

BoA- Eat You Up

Ok! So BoA Decided to break into the Western music industry? Call it a breakthrough, because for a long time the Western world is deprived of Asian music.
I came to see this music video on MuchMusic a few days ago, and I thought. It's BoA! I'm not a big fan of her but I'm excited cuz I never see Asian Asians star in music videos, EVER!
This one is the Asian version, which is what I saw that time. There's also a US version but not as interesting as this one.

Enough said, this song is entirely in English, not unusual because BoA has a number of English songs.

Overall, it has a catchy synth beat beginning to end you can really dance to. The vocals too also sound synth. It's a little repetitive but it has a steady beat. It does have some American vibe to it, like a number of other BoA songs.

The video (PV or MV for Asians) is also pretty good, if not better than the typical 'Asian' video, you know, when singers dance to a green-screen light up background etc. The video is very well directed, and it catches my eye. The backup dancers also shined with their good choreography.

"Eat You Up" is not bad for a debut US single, and it also portray's BoA's image as a brilliant dancer. If you hear the song only she doesn't have that Asian accent which makes BoA more capable in having a successful career in the US music industry. Although BoA did a great job on bringing her music to the US, chances are most of her fanbase will still be Asian.

Rating: 9/10

GTA Barbie dolls

I thought the information on the satiric GTA Barbie dolls interesting. It is used for Gundam Seed Destiny's third opening. She was 15 when she sang this (wow younger than me right now).

This is a drive hardcore rock song, beginning with a melancholic strings orchestral, which later builds into a heavy rock song with powerful guitar riffs. In the verses the guitars have a sturdy and sudden riffs. Hitomi's voice is aggressive in most parts of this song, then becomes more sensitive when the instrumentals become lighter and in the chorus. The synths make the song more than just a 'rock band' song, adding in more supernatural 'effects'. I enjoy the edginess of the song. It brings forth power and anger. The song closes off with a mysterious 'to be continued' ending.

What I like about this song is the bring-it-on action throughout this song, with a stash of sensitivity in between. The song reminds me of an action/mystery TV show. The synth, guitars, and vocals, tie in together very well.

This is an amazing song, but unfortunately, the only amazing song by Hitomi Takahashi. If you love this song, good luck. There are no other songs she sings that is similar to Bokutachi no Yukue. Most of her other songs are rather mediocre, pop-rock sounding, and not very original.

Rating: 4.7/5

If you like this, try: GAME, ourselves, talking 2 myself, (don't) Leave me Alone- Ayumi Hamasaki

Song Sampler- Jessica Simpson- Final Heartbreak

Jessica Simpson - Final Heartbreak.mp3 - jessica simpson

This is one of these album-featured songs, not a single. The song Final Heartbreak is off Jessica Simpson's debut album, Sweet Kisses. It's almost a decade old, but I just feel like a song review for this song.

This song is released in 1999. Back in the days before Jessica Simpson is seen as a 'dumb' blonde, she had this somewhat 'gothy' image, and she rivals Mandy Moore during that time. Jessica during that time is incredibly underrated, shadowed by singers like Britney Spears. Unlike Britney, Jessica's music style during that time were more melancholic pop- ballads. And her voice is very powerful.

Final Heartbreak is one of the many pop-ballads off Sweet Kisses. This song is a little more upbeating than her I Wanna Love You Forever, but they are quite similar. Final Heartbreak also has this dark atmosphere, and I like the melancholic feel to this song. Jessica's vocals are powerful and so are the instrumentals, making this song dramatic. I also like the way the driving guitars make the song edgy. Her voice is especially strong at the choruses. The song cycles from dark to light, both in the veres and the chorus. So we get both a taste of drama and relief.

Although there is nothing I have to complain about the song itself, but in the beginning sounds as it is cut off.

Like I said, this is 1999, which meant this song hasn't drown itself from Avrilmania, unlike Hilary Duff, Miley Cyrus, and of course, Jessica's sister, Ashlee. Although Final Heartbreak leans towards the rock side, but it is not in the same style as Avril Lavigne.

I also have to admit this is probably Jessica Simpson's best song and musical period so far. Listening to this song and thinking about her image during that time kinda makes me wanna laugh. I mean, Jessica Simpson looked gothy back then XD. I'm not a big fan of Jessica Simpson, but Final Heartbreak may have the potential to be one of my most favourite English songs of all time.

Rating: 5/5

If you like this, try: I dunno any song that sounds like this...

Song Sampler- Heidi Montag- Body Language

Yep! My first song sampler review at LYN! I'm posting any random song, doesn't matter who sings it. Now, taking into the GBG mode. It has a dynamic dance beat. This song is two parts electronica and one part rap. I first heard this song in a store and the infectious dance beat caught me.
This song features Spencer Pratt. I don't even know who he is, but he's pretty decent. For a white 'rapper' this isn't too bad. At least better than K. Fed. The instrumentals at the rapping part, not as heavy as the majority of the song, has a dark background, adding some mystical atmosphere.

The Bad: Yes, it's Heidi Montag, and she's err... people hate her. Besides that there's nothing else I hate about this song...

The Gist: Heidi Montag sounds like more than one person, if you assume she actually 'sang it'. I first thought Keri Hilson sang it cuz the song sounds like it's been produced by Timbaland and Keri is the first person to think of. It sounds similar to Britney Spears' Gimme More and Timbaland et al's The Way I Are, which also have this infectious beat. So I went and looked for it. So this is by Heidi Montag, and produced by David Foster (I was like huh? This isn't David Foster).

Overall: Despite the majority hating Heidi Montag, the music is catchy enough to forget who sang it. Even if this song is sung by Utada Hikaru or Paris Hilton, I'd still like it.

Rating: 4/5

If you like this, try: The Way I Are- Timbaland et al, Gimme More- Britney Spears

Shoko Nakagawa- Big☆Bang!!!

To tell you the truth, I haven't reviewed any music in a while. Here's an attempt at reviewing a whole album.

1. We Can Do It!!- The album starts off in a 'Bang!' as mentioned in the album title, with this pop-rock song. The song opening reminds me of a cross between Nanase Aikawa's "Like a Hard Rain" and Hello! Project. Unlike most generic pop-rock Avril-ish stuff, this one's an upbeat, cheery song that makes you wanna rock! Near the end it starts to sound like a concert. And I especially like the energy of the cheering noises before the chorus.
Rating: 4.7/5

2. Sorairo Days (空色デイズ)- Another pop-rock song, similar to "We Can Do It!!!" except without as much hype, which is why I'm not as much into this song than the previous track. Also, the pop-rock is too generic (man that Avril...), and a bit too much of an overdone anime opening. But I have to admit the synth stuff add a little more colour.
Rating: 3/5

3. Koi no Kioku (恋の記憶)- Here is a change in the mood and style. This one's more mellow, and more sentimental. Not nearly as pop-rock as the previous tracks. More like a semi-ballad, except with a catchy beat. Shoko sounds great in the higher register and it really suits her. I also like the way she expresses her strong emotions in this song, especially near the end. Although many people I heard find this song weaker compared to the rest of the album, I think this is her best song.
Rating: 5/5

4. snow tears- Another slow-paced, emotional song, and one that more represents a ballad, with piano, guitar and synth strings. Shoko, again, sings in a lot of emotion in "snow tears", and another song I like. Her voice, however, didn't fit in to the 'elegant' song. One note: She sounds like Hitomi Takahashi.
Rating: 4.9/5

5. Brilliant Dream -shoko☆planet mix- a relief from the hanky-panky ballads, this one is a remix (I guess, never heard the original). A synthy, dreamy song, like that of utopia in space. Shoko's voice here is heavily synthed in this song. Fits in with the spacey theme in this album.
Rating: 4/5

6. Fruit Punch (フルーツポンチ)- Back to upbeat. This is an OK song. Not as rock as her first two songs. Musical style similar to old-school anime. Doesn't stand out as much as the other songs. I'll have to listen to it a bit more times and get used to it. However, it's a catchy, feel good song.
Rating: 2.5/5

7. Strawberry Melody (ストロベリmelody)- This is probably the song I least like. It sounds way to 'very obviously!' anime-ish.
Rating: 2/5

8. pretty please chocolate on top- Fruit Punch, Strawberry Melody, now Pretty please chocolate on top? I'm already hungry right now. Ok, this is an hyper, cute song, and humourous in the beginning. Although the chorus when Shoko sings "pretty please... chocolate on top" sounds melancholic, but this song is cheerful.
Rating: 2.7/5

9. calling location- back to the 'good' old pop rock. This one's more rock rock than the previous tracks. Speaking of pop-rock, I have to regret how Avril Lavigne ruined the face of pop music, making this style of music too generic, even though I do like some pop-rock stuff. Enough said, back to the song. Her voice, on the lower register, is not too bad, though sound nothing like you think Shoko will sound like. Overall, the song isn't too bad, but still kinda generic to me.
Rating: 3/5

10. happily ever after- Think calling location, because they both sound the same to me.
Rating: 3/5

11. starry pink- a piano ballad, then music gets thicker with violin and guitar. Boring and long. Lyrics are ok, but if I listen to it for too long, zzz...
Rating: 2.5/5

12. Sukashikashi Pan Sukoshi Hen? (スカシカシパンすこし変？)- This isn't exactly a song, so I'm not reviewing for being strange.

Overall, her successful debut album is a great start for this newbie. There are some really great songs, and some too generic. Let's just hope Shoko can open herself up to more genres, rather than the way to overdone pop-rock stuff. However, if you are a fan of other similar artists, including Aya Hirano and Chieco Kawabe, you might like this.
Overall rating: 3.5/5

Not up for celebration

Yes, it's Canada day, but it's also Hong Kong returning to China (can't remember what is called in English) day. However, July started a nightmare for me.
This morning my computer couldn't turn on and got bricked, so I have to reset it from the beginning. Saddest thing is, I lost my drawings I scanned a month ago, with a few almost complete. And they're all gone! T_T I should've backed up my images, cuz all I did was back up music files. I mean that's kinda stupid. You can always find your music again, but your five hours in drawing beautiful pics are wasted, and is harder to manage again. Fortunately, there's some stuff still left intact during the megacrash.
Unfortunately I will have to start all my scanning and Photoshop colouring again, so it may take longer time to upload some new artwork online. He's a panda who looks more like a ghost. Kinda odd to feature a panda for a pizza place (unless it's in China or it promotes something Chinese) You know what's creepier is the music. Like, who would want to have a birthday party there? Looks more like a Hallowe'en party to me. You should be glad that Pizza Planet with Peppi Roni is defunct, but either way, it's just plain scary. @_@

CD packaging! The good and bad

Who still buys CD's these days when you can download off the internet? But anyways, let's talk about the good and the bad ways to package a CD.

Japanese CD + DVD (singles and albums): The first photo is a Koda Kumi album I found in some CD store. It's about an inch think, or more (which is quite a lot for a CD case, a normal one is less than 1 cm)
This is no problem because this has 3 CD's, but you have to take a look at the next one.
The other photo is a CD+DVD of Ayumi Hamasaki's singles Fairyland (centre) and Talkin' 2 Myself (right). The one I'm holding is Koda Kumi if you want to know how thick these cases are. The singles are the same thickness too, like bricks! When you come to think of it, it's space-hogging. If you have a dozen of these (Japanese singles are big compared to those in America.) You'd fill out your shelves with space that could've hold thrice more regular CD's. Plus it's plastic so you can't recycle it. Does avex really have to make cases this thick for CD+DVD singles? They only hold 2 CDs.

Hacken Lee's CDs in a bag: Very environmentally friendly paper, but not very convenient when you store the CD's. Not your average CD case, but looks great though...

Elvis eco friendly packaging: it's eco-friendly like Hacken Lee, it's space efficient, but it doesn't look that great, does it? You'll see a lot of these in Canada and America these days.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://lilyarneedles.blogspot.com/2008/06/cd-packaging-good-and-bad.html' title='CD packaging!
